R&D Collaboration The Way Forward For Sarawak: Premier
BANGI (Kuala Lumpur), Wed: Collaboration in the field of research and development (R&D) is the key to unlock the potentials of Sarawak’s vast resources to uplift its economy, the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Zohari Tun Openg said here today.
The country, Sarawak in particular, still had the space and untapped resources that could generate tremendous value down the value chain if duly studied and developed commercially, he said in his speech in conjunction with his visit to the Petronas’ research facility and signing of collaborative agreement with the national oil company, here today.
Citing the research on algae as a source of bio-fuel by Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) and the Sarawak Infectious Disease Research Centre in Kota Samarahan, he said Sarawak was giving emphasis to R&D in many areas to increase the value its resources.
He said of particular interest to Sarawak was the R&D on algae to produce SAF that is also part of the ongoing research programs at the PETRONAS’ centre besides the study of hydrogen as a source of future fuel..
As such he said it was only appropriate that Sarawak and PETRONAS cooperate in R&D in development of green energy for the benefit of both the country and Sarawak in particular.
“… I am sharing with you that our neighbour countries are looking at us. They are short of space and energy…we have got all these..why not we also collaborate with them “ he said.
He expressed his belief that if the country could create its “brand” as a premier proponent and producer of renewable and green energy, then it should be able to capture the market much like PETRONAS being established as a global brand, he said.
He told those present that Sarawak had amended its forest and land laws in order to give the state the capacity to be involved seriously in the global race towards decarbonisation and the production of green energy, chiefly hydrogen.
Investors from Japan and Korea had recognised Sarawak’s potentials and they had confirmed their investments in the production of 100,000 tons per year of hydrogen with10,000 tons retained for local use, he added.
Earlier, the President & Group CEO of PETRONAS. Datuk Tengku Taufik Tengku Aziz also spoke.
Later, the Premier witnessed the signing of agreement for the supply of H2 Electrolyser for Darul Hana and Batu Kawa Integrated Refuelling Station between PTSB and SEDC and for the Joint Technology Collaboration Agreement for Renewable Oil between PRSB and SEDC Energy.
This was followed by a gallery tour of specialty chemicals, automation and robotics before a tour of pilot plants for hydrogen production, renewable oil and Bio-MEG.
Among those accompanying the Premier were the Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Dr. Hazland bin Abang Hipni and the chairman of SEDC, Deputy Minister in Premier’s
Department (Corporate Affairs and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah bin Haji Saidol and Chairman of SEDC, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Haji Abdul Aziz Bin Dato Haji Husain.
